Manipulating Spin-Orbit Interactions

Associate Professor Shinji Miwa

Magnetic anisotropy, which is caused by spin-orbit coupling, occurs at the surface interface of metallic magnetic materials. In this lecture, we will introduce the electric field control of this magnetic anisotropy.

The whole picture of cancer using sequencing technology

Project Associate Professor Ayako Suzuki

With the development of sequencing technology, the genomes of numerous cancer patients have been decoded to search for cancer-causing genetic mutations. In addition to genomes, it is now possible to measure not only genomes but also epigenomes, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, and transcriptomes, which capture the entire gene expression, at various levels. The accumulation of sequence data has progressed dramatically, and it is expected that the integrated interpretation of these data will provide a new, previously unknown picture of cancer. In this seminar, I would like to introduce various novel sequencing technologies and their applications to cancer research.

Thinking about the "city" from the perspective of Society 5.0

Professor Atsushi Deguchi

We will read and understand the concept of Society 5.0 proposed in the Fifth Science and Technology Basic Plan (approved by the Cabinet in January 2016), and consider new themes for urban research based on an analysis of the various issues facing Japanese cities and residences, with an eye on the types of smart cities that have been developed so far and their development.
