Old houses and slums

Professor Akiko Okabe

The informal areas of cities in developing countries and the vacant houses that have not been marketed, which have become a social problem in Japan, are located "outside" the formal. Through architectural practice that modifies such actual spaces, we will question the exclusivity of "ownership" and look toward a pluralistic future in which the legitimacy of "making something one's own" is legitimized.

Plasma turbulence and gyrokinetic theory

Visiting Professor Hideo Sukama

Instability and turbulence driven by density and temperature gradients in confinement of high-temperature plasmas in strong magnetic fields, which increase the transport of plasma particles and energy, is a major problem in the realization of fusion energy. In this talk, I will introduce the gyrokinetic theory, which has been widely used as a basic model for theories and simulations dealing with microscopic instability and turbulence phenomena in fusion and space plasmas.

Mechanism of Action of Bacterial Toxins Targeting RNA Molecules

Professor Kozo Tomita

We are studying the mechanism of action of toxin proteins that are involved in explosive growth of pathogenic microorganisms, dormancy and inactivity under stress conditions, and acquisition of antibiotic resistance upon exposure to antibiotics. In this presentation, I will introduce the toxin proteins that target RNA molecules, their reaction regulation, and target recognition mechanisms among these toxin proteins.
