Research Activities

Natural commutated converter for superconducting energy storage system (1998-2001):
A superconducting energy storage system (SMES) requires a current-source-type power converter because it stores energy in a large inductor. A natural commutated converter achieves high power conversion efficiency and is a current-source-type power converter. However, it has problems with output power controllability enhancement and in clearing controllable regions where currents stably commutate between switches. In this study, the controllability and stable operation area of an inverter-converter bridge energy transfer circuit was analyzed theoretically and experiments were conducted. There was good agreement between the theory and the experimental results.
Micro-grid consisting several kinds of generation systems (2001-[present]):
A design and control method for a micro-grid consisting of several kinds of generation systems have been proposed. Experiments have been conducted using real building loads. It was shown the proposed method is useful for such systems.
Fault current limiter using YBCO thin films (2003-[present]):
A designing method for a fault current limiter using large YBCO thin films is been studied.
