Research Activities
Development of Morphogenetic Operations in Structural Design
Morphogenetic operations of structure in architecture have advanced into the phase where structural elements also serve as environmental elements.
Some of them will be developed by the following practices :
Dynamics Operations : Single structural design method used for diverse forms based on dynamics
Geometry Operations : Choreographic control of complicated geometry
Experimentation : Physically sensing the operation processes that appear in workshop scale structures
Structure in Architecture is appearing in diverse forms composed of diverse materials, constructed by diverse methods, and exposed to diverse impacts. If we can compose a single structural design method for these complicated targets, we will be able to design more material oriented forms based on dynamics, geometry, craftsmanship, and energy consumption.
This will also be valuable when considering the operation of forms, which are so complicated that they are too difficult to even draw.
Research projects in detail are as follows :
Dynamics Operations
Approach using transparent glass, resin structure
Specimen of stained glass structure.
Approach using steel mesh forms based on welding technique and operation of buckling phenomenon
Steel mesh structure at "Hakodate Future University."
Approach using wooden mesh forms developed with traditional connection system, "Kigumi"
Complicated wooden mesh structure at "Sunny Hills Japan"
Approach using manually operated form finding algorithm based on safety ratio, energy absorption
Algorithm to describe plastic hinges that also describes buckling behavior
Condensation of the eigenvalue equation of buckling
Geometry Operations
Approach using accumulative shape, freeform, polyhedral shape
Accumulative structure of cubes at "Ai-Cubes"
Experimentation
Workshop scale morphogenetic design based on geometry, materials, dynamics, craftsmanship, site matters, and the spirit of engineering
A light and soft structure in which people do not die even if it collapse
