The state of emergency, initially scheduled to be lifted on February 7th, declared by the Japanese government on January 7th, has been extended until March 7th. New arrivals will not be possible while under the state of emergency.
New arrivals of international students and foreign researchers to Japan were possible under the "Phased Measure for Resuming Cross-Border Travel" for 'Entry of foreign nationals with other special exceptional circumstances' using visas issued with the "Residence Track". However, the Government of Japan issued the suspension, from January 14th, of "Business Track" and "Residence Track" with all the countries/regions covered under the framework until the state of emergency declaration is lifted. The new entry of foreign nationals into Japan under these two tracks will not be permitted until the state of emergency declaration is lifted.
