Representation of temporal and spatial information in the hippocampus
Visiting Professor Shigeyoshi Fujisawa
The hippocampus is the brain region responsible for the formation of episodic memory, which is the memory of experienced events. In this article, I will introduce the physiological functions of the hippocampus from the perspective of spatial and temporal information processing.
When will the complete decoding of the human genome be accomplished, and what new fields will it create?
Professor Shin-ichi Morishita
Even after the "completion of the decoding of the human genome" was declared in 2003, efforts to complete the unfinished human genome continue. There is a sense of hope in the genome research community that a complete sequencing will be achieved in the near future. I will discuss the key technologies, the algorithms for fragmenting, decoding, and reconstructing the long DNA. I will also discuss the research style that can be expected after the complete sequencing is achieved.
Sea level observation by Doppler radar
Professor Chang-Kyu Lin
Sea level is constantly fluctuating. There are various causes for this fluctuation, such as winds blowing on the sea surface, sea surface pressure, seawater density, and topography, but in general, the sea surface fluctuation is represented by waves and currents that represent the shape of the sea surface. Everything that exists in the ocean is affected by waves and currents, causing it to drift and move, and ocean engineering begins with understanding ocean fluctuations and ends with evaluating their effects. This presentation will introduce the remote sensing of physical phenomena on the sea surface such as water level fluctuation (tsunami and tide level), waves, sea breeze, and sea ice using pulsed Doppler radar.
