The Feed-in tariff, or FIT, accelerated the construction of biomass power plants in Japan. However, as much of the fuel is imported, the connection between reforestation and local community development is not well-constructed. This seminar explores the possibility of biomass usage in a local community, examining case studies.

Misato Ohtani, Professor, Division of Biosciences, Department of Integrated Biosciences

Although woody biomass is expected to be a next-generation sustainable energy, its low fill factor of energy and difficulty in decomposition obstruct industrial utilization, and improvement in usability is required. The seminar introduces cutting-edge research on woody plant biotechnology for producing ideal woody biomass and discusses its problems.
