Encouraging the Resilience of the Community Damaged by Natural Disasters
HONDA Riki, Professor, Division of Environmental Studies
As natural disasters are becoming more serious than ever, the importance of recovering from the damaged society is increasing in addition to disaster prevention. The importance of the community’s autonomous actions and the elements that promote such activities concerning the recovery potential or resilience will be discussed in the seminar.
Controlling Array Structures of Electron Spins in Matters
TAKAGI Rina, Associate Professor, Division of Transdisciplinary Sciences
As atoms and molecules arrange themselves regularly to form crystals, numerous electron spins in a matter form regular array structures (magnetic structures) and originate various electronic properties. This seminar introduces material design aiming for configuration control of electron spins.
Possibility of Epigenome Drug Making for Cancer and Infections
YAMAGISHI Makoto, Associate Professor, Division of Bioscience
The epigenome is the “genetic information (genome) usage” and is subject to the age and environment of the organism. Epigenome defines the differentiation process from the stem cell to particular cells. The reasons why the uniqueness of identical twins who have the same genomes becomes more distinct as they grow and contract different diseases are that the epigenomes change. Viral and other infectious diseases will dramatically change the host epigenomes. With the advancement of analysis technology and computing power, abnormal epigenomes of cancer and other infectious diseases have been identified. The development of next-generation drugs that aims for high plasticity is gathering attention. In this seminar, the lecturer’s successful experience with epigenome drug-making will be introduced while discussing why fundamental studies are necessary for intractable diseases and what we can expect from epigenome treatment.
